Description: The SOA Research Institute’s Aging and Retirement Strategic Research Program is interested in a broad exploration of issues related to aging and retirement for LGBTQ+ people. In issuing this call for essays, the Program aims to gather perspectives, opinions and data on the short and long-term consequences of applicable aging and retirement issues for a variety of stakeholders -- individuals, partners, family members, employers, financial advisors, and others --- and how these impacts may be felt both directly and indirectly. A primary aspect of this call for essays is to explore how retirement-related outcomes are experienced by LGBTQ+ people and the diversity of experiences within this group. Another aspect is to promote enhanced understanding of the underlying issues surrounding these differences. In this regard, there is interest in furthering understanding from an informational perspective and/or generating ideas for potential solutions and improvements.

Description: As the population and workforce age, it is important to rethink how and when we retire. This article provides a big picture overview of issues related to opening up more options for exit from the labor force and gradual retirement. It reviews developments in the last few years that are important including the growth of gig employment, more remote work, more technology, workforce shortages, and changes in employee benefits that previously were a barrier to gradual retirement. It calls for more focus on adaption to the aging society. Several publications are cited and it includes a reference list.

Description: This report will provide an overview of how COVID-19 and the related societal changes have affected U.S. employers and individuals as we focus on retirement, summarize the SOA Research Institute-sponsored research, identify some of the current uncertainties, and provide ideas and questions for thinking about the future. This is a relatively unusual report because most COVID-19 related reports have focused on immediate issues, and not on thinking about the longer term. The Institute reports consider longer-term issues and raise questions that need to be answered.

Description: This report, Phase 2 of a project on communicating pension risk, includes interviews with several individuals representing various aspects of plan administration: plan fiduciaries, finance professionals, consultants, and providers. The report provides a summary of each interview, concluding with common themes.

Description: How does retirement preparedness in the U.S. vary across racial/ethnic groups? This report compiles and analyzes a wide variety of works that look at this this question from specific questions. The result provides a broader perspective through comparison of seven metrics tracked from 2012 to 2021.
